Google PageRank algorithm explained

Interesting and simple explanation of Google Pagerank algorithm.

 »

4little1s.com baby gifts web site explains the Google PageRank algorithm

PR (A) = (1-d) +d (PR(t1)/C(t1) + %u2026 + PR(tn) /C (TN))

While appearing not to be a totally exclusive factor, having a good
page rank appears to help your position within Google. I say ‘appears’
as the overall algorithm to a high position does change, so while one
day the emphasises is on xyz, it may and probably does change, once
people suddenly realise what they should be doing. DMOZ being a good
example of this!

As a mathematician by trade, starting the business was excellent for
my brain, but when we talk about Algorithms its heaven.

The equation above is actually quite easy to understand and I try to
explain as simply as I can:

PR is the actual Page Rank you are looking to get
A = The Web page in question (use your home page as an example)
d = A suppressive dampening effect variable I suggest a value of 0.85
is not far from the mark
t1..tn = Pages linking to (A) In this case we used our homepage
C = Is the number of links on the page that are outbound to other
sites you have linked to

Subject: Participants wanted for a TRULY FUN fMRI study on decision making
To: xxxxx

Apologies for cross-posting!

Dear Candidate,

We are again looking for male volunteers to participate in a TRULY FUN (believe me!) fMRI experiment on decision making in which you will have to rate the attractiveness of erotic pictures. You can participate if you are male, right-handed, meet the medical requirements listed below and if you haven’t participated in this study before.

Your participation will consist of two parts: First, a screening part in which we will test some behavioural data, and, if you qualify, then the actual fMRI experiment. The screening takes approx. 1 hour and will determine whether you are suitable to do the fMRI experiment (we need to check whether, for example, any medical condition precludes you from participating). The screening can be done online and at your own pace. The fMRI experiment takes 1.5 hours, during which you will be in the fMRI scanner for about 1 hour. Your will earn 5 Euros for the screening plus 20 Euros for the fMRI session, hence a total of 25 Euros. If you cannot participate in the fMRI experiment, you will still be reimbursed with 5 Euros. Additionally, if you qualify for scanning, you get the chance to get an image of your own brain. The scanner is located at the Academic Medical Center (near metro station Holendrecht).

Note: you can only participate if you have not participated in this experiment before, and if you are male, heterosexual, right-handed and don’t wear glasses (contact lenses are fine). You cannot participate if you are claustrophobic or if you have any non-removable metal parts in or on your body, such as non-removable piercings, prostheses, pacemakers….
Good news: Dutch as a native language is not a requirement. If you decide to participate, we will provide you with more information about the study and details concerning the scanner.

The behavioural screening can be accessed at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=hRXdmjVRhU3SSUlsC0Bvsg_3d_3d

===============================================================
CALL FOR PAPERS and POSTERS
Agent-Directed Simulation Symposium (ADS’10)
Orlando, Florida, USA
April 12-14, 2010

http://www.site.uottawa.ca/~oren/conf-org/ADS_2010/ADS-CFP.htm
Manuscript Submission: November 30, 2009.

Sponsored by The Society for Modeling and Simulation
International (SCS) in collaboration with ACM/SIGSIM.
==============================================================

As part of the 2010 Spring Simulation Multi-conference (SpringSim’10) http://www.scs.org/confernc/springsim/springsim10/springsim10.htm

the 2010 Agent-Directed Simulation Symposium is a premier platform to
explore all three aspects of the synergy of simulation and agent
technologies. Hence, it has a special place within simulation and
agent conferences, including agent-based (social) simulation
conferences. Therefore the ADS symposium fills a gap in the agent
community as well as the simulation community.

The purpose of the ADS symposium is to facilitate dissemination of the
most recent advancements in the theory, methodology, application, and
toolkits of agent-directed simulation. Agent-directed simulation is
comprehensive in the integration of agent and simulation technologies,
by including models that use agents to develop domain-specific
simulations, i.e., agent simulation (this is often referred to as
agent-based simulation -when other two important aspects are not
considered), and by also including the use of agent technology to
develop simulation techniques and toolkits that are subsequently
applied, either with or without agents.

Hence, agent-directed simulation consists of three distinct, yet
related areas that can be grouped under two categories as follows:

 1. Simulation for Agents (agent simulation): simulation of agent
systems in engineering, human and social dynamics, military
    applications etc.
 2. Agents for Simulation (which has two aspects): agent-supported
simulation deals with the use of agents as a support facility to
enable computer assistance in problem solving or enhancing
cognitive capabilities; and agent-based simulation that focuses
on the use of agents for the generation of model behavior in a
    simulation study.

Through the theme of agent-directed simulation, the symposium will
bring together agent technologies, tools, toolkits, platforms,
languages, methodologies, and applications in a pragmatic manner. In
this symposium, established researchers, educators, and students are
encouraged to come together and discuss the benefits of agent
technology in their use and application for simulation. It is a way
for people to discuss why and how they have used agent technology in
their simulations, and describe the benefit of having done so.

The theme of ADS’10 is based on the observation of the following
premises.

 * The growth of new advanced distributed computing standards along
with the rapid rise of e-commerce are providing a new context that
acts as a critical driver for the development of next generation
systems. These standards revolve around service-oriented
technologies, pervasive computing, web-services, Grid, autonomic
computing, ambient intelligence etc. The supporting role that
intelligent agents play in the development of such systems is
becoming pervasive, and simulation plays a critical role in the
analysis and design of such systems.

 * The use of emergent agent technologies at the organization,
interaction (e.g., coordination, negotiation, communication) and
agent levels (i.e. reasoning, autonomy) are expected to advance
the state of the art in various application technologies is
difficult. Using agent-supported simulation techniques for
testing complex agent systems is up and coming field.

 * To facilitate bridging the gap between research and application,
there is a need for tools, agent programming languages, and
methodologies to analyze, design, and implement complex,
   non-trivial agent-based simulations. Existing agent-based
simulation tools are still not mature enough to enable developing
agents with varying degrees cognitive and reasoning capabilities.

ADS’10 will provide a leading forum to bring together researchers and
practitioners from diverse simulation societies within computer science,
social sciences, engineering, business, education, human factors, and
systems engineering. The involvement of various agent-directed
simulation groups will enable the cross-fertilization of ideas and
development of new perspectives by fostering novel advanced solutions,
as well as enabling technologies for agent-directed simulation

AUTHOR GUIDE

 * Technical papers provide a longer format for presenting experience
reports, research results, or descriptions of  ”work in progress”.
They are limited to 8 pages.

 * Short position papers are targeted at raising a question or framing
an issue for discussion during the symposium. Position papers are
   limited to 3 pages.

 * Poster presentations present an opportunity to present work in
progress and receive feedback from colleagues. A one page write-up
of the poster presentations will be included in the proceedings.

(For all, required font sizes are: min 10 pt for text and min 9 pt for
figures or references).

Papers should be submitted electronically to
     http://www.softconf.com/scs/ADS10/ .
All papers will be subject to a peer-reviewing process by three program
committee members. (Please see the key dates listed below.)

FINAL PAPER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

All prospective authors, whose papers are accepted for inclusion in the
program, will be invited to submit their position or technical  papers
to ADS’10. Accepted and registered papers will be published in the
conference proceedings by the SCS. In addition, the committee will

De snor drukken

Movember actie!

New plans offer 5x the storage space
The Wikidot professional plans now offer five times the storage space for your wiki attachments. Pro-lite accounts get 15 GB (instead of 3 GB), Pro accounts get 50 GB (instead of 10 GB), and Pro-plus accounts get 100 GB (instead of 20 GB).

The roadmap to your wiki’s future
The Wikidot Roadmap project gives us a sense of direction for where Wikidot is heading. It’s a way for you to show the Wikidot developers which feature you want them to implement next. This complements the weneed list at the official blog site. The Roadmap project website lets you make pledges to the development of the software. This effectively lets you buy features. It’s completely risk-free as you can withdraw your pledge at any time, even after the feature has been added!

New prices, 50%-off special offer
The Wikidot Blog points out that Wikidot Inc. has doubled the prices of its Pro accounts. “A Pro-Lite account now costs $49.90 (€49.90 incl. VAT) for a year, and a Pro-Plus account now costs $239.90 (€239.00 incl. VAT) for a year. You can see the new prices on our plans page.”

Wikidot: profitable after 3 years
The Wikidot blog reports that Wikidot is making a growing profit. “When we launched Wikidot.com three years ago we had the vision of offering a reliable, fast, and economic way of building web sites, wikis, and social web applications. It was not clear, at the start, whether this plan would work. Today, I’m happy to be able to tell you that after almost a year of having introduced Pro accounts, Wikidot is making a modest but growing profit.”

New site answers your frequent questions
The new FAQ site answers all your frequent questions about Wikidot.com, including such popular questions as “What is a category?”, “Can I edit the CSS of a theme?”, and “Is Wikidot Free?”, and of course the number 1 favorite for new site admins, “My Forum does not work!”.

Instant educational wikis without waiting
The Wikidot.com blog said today that, “While free private sites are limited to five members, Wikidot.com has offered universities and schools the option of unlimited private sites for their classes and courses. Now, we’ve decided to make it really simple to get an educational site. In your site manager Access policy page, just click the “educational upgrade” link, enter your school or university name, and description of project, and click “Please upgrade my site now”.”

Wikidot.com database abandons spinning rust for Intel X-25 SSDs
The Wikidot.com blog reported today that “Wikidot.com’s primary database sits on a RAID cluster of top-end Intel solid-state memory (SSD) drives. These are expensive but much faster than spinning rust, and much more reliable. The SSDs are Intel X25-E Extreme, one of the fastest SSD drives out there. We’re seeing a 7x improvement in database response time, and a 3x improvement in page rendering time.”

Snow Leopard wiki gets software version
Softpedia reports: “Designed and developed by Dan Greuel, SnowChecker is a desktop application based on the Wiki-based Snow Leopard Compatibility website. Thanks to the thousands of users adding compatibility data to snowleopard.wikidot.com, the program can effectively show which apps are fully or partially compatible with Snow Leopard, as well as provide direct links to the websites they’re hosted on.”

Wikidot.com approaches 400k users, 4M pages
Wikidot.com is approaching 4M pages and 400,000 users. Yesterday, according to Alexa, 0.039% of all Internet users worldwide visited Wikidot.com and there are 3,616 sites more popular than Wikidot.com. The Danish like Wikidot.com most of all (they only visit 587 sites more often) while the Chinese prefer 48,974 other sites. Wikidot.com is blocked in mainland China.

Recent improvements to Wikidot.com
Over the last month, we’ve seen the new Join and Clone modules, a simpler registration and sign-in process, a new “open” access policy that lets new members join your site with one click, many new ListPage features, simple data forms, and over fifty other bug fixes and improvements.

New “Wiki Magazine” will cover wikis, Wikidot
Wiki Magazine “will contain articles, profiles, tips and tricks, design features and interviews. It will initially concentrate on Wikidot but during 2010 we hope to expand the magazine to cover many other wiki products and services.”

Author Stefan Münz explains why he uses Wikidot
Well-known web author Stefan Münz explained why he prefers publishing on the Wikidot platform, quoting from an article he wrote about Wikidot.com:
